The day begins with bitter cold and full sun. I get dressed, have toast and a cup of tea, then out into the traffic to pick up the ham at the grocery, favorite holiday cookies at the bakery, the hardware for lightbulbs and finally, at the last, a coffee for my husband. More tea to warm up. Then, I bundle up again with the dog and take him as far as I can stand (about two blocks) before the cold devours me and we return home. And more tea. Like my mother, I'm an inveterate tea drinker.
And then, the day settles down. The light of the sun evelopes the house, filling various spaces with heat and lovely shadows. I wander through the rooms. Last day to ship before Christmas, the e-mail retailers declare. Whatever I'd planned to buy is bought. My son is home. Now we can just drift.
The second day past the solstice. I don't notice any more light here in the late afternoon. But I know it's there, growing stronger each day.
