A cool drink

We are  baking here in the heat. A neighbor, someone whose house I walk by every night, has the loveliest bird bath made of what looks like sculpted glass. I think of it as the Art Institute version of a birdbath.

The hibiscus gets a drink

It was 101 degrees here today. Stifling. Not the slightest breeze. Then, about 6 o'clock, the sky darkened and for about 10 minutes, it rained. I'd been worrying about the birds and the baby bunnies in our backyard with such heat, so, just a few hours ago, I'd put out a bowl of ice water, hoping they could get a drink. When I went out to take a picture of the hibiscus, the flowers reminded me of orange trumpets.

The heat returns, in spades. At 5 p.m. we walk to the park to find an enterprising Mom who's found a novel way to entertain the kids--dragon kites! The breeze was just enough to lift them.

You never know what you're going to find in the alley--two wonderful pieces of discarded glass. I hope they find a good home.

Another beautiful day--in the high seventies. The weatherman predicts nineties tomorrow. Tonight will be spent watering and enjoying the last cool breezes for a while.

Another birthday

We celebrated my husband's birthday tonight. A few good friends, buttercream cake and strawberries and lots of great, funny stories.

The temperature dropped almost 20 degrees this morning so I actually had a chance to sit outside, drink a frosty iced tea and contemplate planting the flowers I bought last weekend. Tonight, after dinner, my husband and I plan a lovely walk in the twilight.
