I am always so grateful for the internet where I can go online and, within seconds, find out how wasps make their nests. When I took this photo, the occupants had flown the coop. The nest they left behind looks like it's made of fragile paper, almost like papier mache. And, in fact, I learned from a video made by a high school biology teacher, wasps chew on wood pulp and mix it with their saliva to create the rooms in their charming nests. And now they've left behind this lovely paper sculpture. If I could have, I would have carried it home with me, but it was still attached to the very high branch of a tree. Thank goodness for long camera lenses.
